REQUIREMENTS FOR AN AU PAIR

If you are interested in an au pair stay, you have to meet certain basic requirements. One of these requirements concerns your age, as you have to be at least 18 years old to become an au pair. In some countries, however, there are exceptions, such as in England. Here you can already start your au pair stay at the age of 17.

On top of that there is a maximum age which must not be exceeded for the conventional au pair stay; usually this age lies between 26 and 30 years. Since an au pair has to stay in the host country for quite a long time, you should have no obligations like a spouse or children.

In addition you should already have experience in dealing with children, for example, babysitting or younger siblings. While choosing your host country, you should also be aware that you must have an adequate knowledge of the host country’s language.

To avoid problems on your arrival in your desired host country, you should make sure that your passport is valid beyond your planned return date. As an au pair you have to be in good health (physical and mental) which you have to certify with a health certificate from a doctor. In some cases, you may even have to submit a certificate of good conduct.

WHAT SHOULD YOUR PERSONALITY BE LIKE AS AN AU PAIR?

As an au pair you should be open-minded, friendly, responsible and you should like children. You should also be flexible, creative and work well under stress. To many host families it is important that you have references about your experiences in child care, as parents want to be sure their children are with responsible persons. For your daily life with the children you need to be creative because only if you can entertain them, you will have fun at your au pair job. Living with children is never boring, every day is different. You should know how to structure your day as au pair and you should enjoy the work with the children and the house work. In exchange, during your au pairstay you will grow as a person and also improve your language skills which will help you in your future life as well.

FUTHER SKILLS THAT MIGHT COME IN HANDY AS AU PAIR

It will be easier for you to find a host family if you have for example a driver’s license. Especially in the countryside it is very useful if you know how to drive a car and can thus move around easily. Many host parents hope that their au pair will be able to teach their children things that they can’t do or maybe don’t have time for because of their work. If you know how to play an instrument, are talented in sports or have any other interesting hobbies your host family will love you. Also, many host parents like if their au pair knows how to perform CPR, in case there is an emergency. Some host families or au pair agencies might ask you for a certificate of conduct or a health certificate. You can obtain your certificate of conduct at the police or at the city council. Your doctor can give you a health certificate. If you go to our downloads you can find an example of a health certificate. Just print it and bring it to your doctor, he will only have to fill it out.
