Requirements for an Au Pair Stay in New Zealand

  • age : between 18 and 30 years
  • not married, no children
  • child care experience

  • clean criminal record

  • it’s an advantage if you have a driver’s license (class B)
  • first aid course can be an advantage
  • intermediate level of English

Au Pair Tasks in New Zealand

  • Your main au pair task in New Zealand is, obviously, to take  care of the host family’s children , and also to help with some small chores around the house.Our advice:  Make sure to write down all of your  tasks  in the au pair contract so there won’t be any misunderstandings later on.

  • Even though au pair  working hours  are not officially regulated in New Zealand, au pairs usually work between 25 and 40 hours a week .
    • Free Time:  1 day off per week (at least once a month it has to be a Sunday)
    • Vacation : 4 weeks per year

Au pair salary in New Zealand

Just as the working hours are not regulated, there are also no rules about an  au pair’s salary  in New Zealand. The salary therefore depends on the amount of hours that you work per week. On average, an au pair in New Zealand earns  180 New Zealand Dollars per week .

Duration of the Au Pair Stay in New Zealand

  • Generally, an au pair stays in New Zealand between  6 and 12 months.  Most au pairs leave from July to September; this is the time when the competition for au pair positions is especially intense because all the new au pair candidates  apply  around that time.important ! Some au pairs that are from non-EU countries can only stay for 3 months with the same family with the Working Holiday Visa. After 3 months, they have to change employers. Vaccinations for New Zealand

  • There are no specific requirements for  vaccinations for au pairs in New Zealand , but ask your doctor anyway just to be sure. Many au pairs get shots for diphtheria, hepatitis A/B, and tetanus before traveling to New Zealand.Are you thinking about traveling to  New Zealand  between December and April? Then you will be there during the rainy season, which also means that there will be a lot of insects. So, make sure you have a good repellent. Obviously, you can also get repellent in New Zealand.

 Au Pair Visa for New Zealand

In order to be able to work as an au pair in New Zealand, you need a  Working Holiday Visa.  For this visa, you have to prove that you have at least 4,200 NZD in your bank account, as well as enough money for a round trip to New Zealand.

The only exceptions are au pairs from Australia, who can travel to New Zealand without a  visa .

  • The au pair has to pay for the  travel expenses . Sometimes, if the host family is very happy with the au pair, they help pay for the return trip.Upon entering  New Zealand,  you have to be able to prove that you have over NZD 4,200 in your bank account.

Driver’s License in New Zealand

  • If you are from a country of the European Union, you don’t need an international  driver’s license for New Zealand.With an EU driver’s license, you can drive up to 1 year in New Zealand. If your driver’s license wasn’t issued in English, it must be translated by a certified translator.
